As we all know that outer space is filled up with lots of junks of our space explorations. Experts found that approximately 128 million pieces of space debris wound have been floating around. They are having size 1 mm or smaller. 34,000 large pieces of 10 cm. "Drifting island of plastic", said Ekaterini Kavvada, Directorate General of Defence Industry and Space at the European Commission.
Parts leftover from rocket boosters, defunct satellites, bits from the explosion of man made objects all these contribute to space debris.
Elon Musk, Richard Branson and likes count cost of the space cleaning mission in dollars, it would be weighed in metric tons. A 2008 estimation by NASA put the number of defunct satellites in space at 500,000. Even a small 1 cm of speeding debris is enough to damage or destroy multimillion dollar satellites, cause huge explosions. Not only for satellites it is also a threat to earth also (piece of defunct Russian satellite travelling at a speed of 8 miles/sec caused three ISS crew members to take the emergency shelter in Soyuz in 2015).
When more satellites enter space it will lead to clashing each other. Companies like Space X and One Web launching their array of satellites into the already crowded Lower Earth Orbit (LEO).
"Space sweeper" is an experiment to clean up the space by Elon Musk's Space X company carried along with supplies for ISS in Falcon 9 rocket in 2018. Scientists hoped that the space would all get cleaned up when "Remove DEBRIS" the test run of the device is done. The machine is created by UK 's University of Surrey Space Centre. This was their 53rd launch into space.
