South Korean tech giant, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd may discontinue its Galaxy Note phone line in 2021, according to Reuters, as the company contends with falling demand for pricey smartphones caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The company is set to focus on its flagship Galaxy S line-up of phones, while Samsung's foldable phones will take the place of the Galaxy Note as Samsung's more experimental premium devices, with an optional stylus which needs to be bought separately.
This decision might not be a big surprise to the tech world and actually makes a lot of sense. When Note series were introduced, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note models were distinct. Galaxy S models were smaller, more mainstream devices, whereas the comparatively massive Note were a cut closer to a tablet, complete with the iconic stylus that helped set it apart. But fast-forward to 2020, and phones like the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are effectively competing against each other for the same audience, with far more similar specs, screen sizes and functionality.
The other factor is the Galaxy Note line-up just isn't that special anymore. In prior years, Samsung used the Note to experiment with some of its bolder and more innovating design changes. But by the arrival of foldable phones like the Galaxy Z fold, which have bigger screens than the traditional Galaxy S and Note line-ups and the kind of bold new hardware meant that Note wasn't that interesting anymore.
