How can we identify a women have any distress?
A city in northern India is taking a different approach towards this concept. It wants to detect distress on women’s faces, so to assist them if they’re attacked or threatened, by facial recognition system.
State Uttar Pradesh is having a high crime rate, with 170+ cases registered for offenses against women everyday in 2020. On light of this State is using aid of technology.
Cops in Lucknow, capital city of Uttar Pradesh (UP), aim to install an AI-based camera system on 200 crime hotspots, including airport, railway station, cafes etc., that will send alert to nearest Police Station or Police Control room, if system detects distress on the women’s face. Lucknow police commissioner D K Thakur stated this without giving further details on how it going to function.
In between discussions on this is popping up,
There is no one-to-one mapping between a facial expression and an emotion.-Rana El Kaliouby (co-founder and CEO of Affectiva, an AI company working on human emotion and cognition)
Many are of opinion that this is not a complete solution and more feasible solution would be to increase police patrol numbers during night and deploying more policemen in crime hotspot. Not only the premise of this solution deeply problematic, but there are also numerous concerns and reasons why this is basically an idea not to be preferred.

Expressions are not always clear. One coming down the street after an argue with mother, may be about having food, can trigger an alert and leading policeman reaching there.
Either this concept going to succeed or failed, is something we are looking forward.
