New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be laying foundation stone for new parliament building on 10 December. Bhoomi Pooja will be did along with that. Project is expected to be complete by 2022, and door will be opening on 75th year of Independence. New parliament building consuming space of 64,500sq.m is constructing at a cost of ₹971crores.
New building will be having a capacity of 888 members in Lok Sabha and 384 members in Rajya Sabha. Even though currently 543 in Lok Sabha and 245 member in Rajya Sabha are there, considering increase in number of members in upcoming years. This new building will be showcasing cultural diversity of the country.
Existing building will be maintained as it is by Central Archaeology department. Present build is of 560ft in diameter. Existing building is designed by Edwin Lertyen and Herbert Baker at an expense of ₹ 83 Lakh at that time and took six years for completion. Opening ceremony was on January 18, 1927 by then Governor General of India, Lord Irwin.
